How the countdown works

The board shows the exact days, hours, minutes and seconds left until New Year in the time zone you choose. This page explains what that number is and why it can differ from a calendar count.

What the board counts down to

Midnight on 1 January in the selected time zone — the exact instant the year changes there. The digits are the true time remaining: days are whole 24-hour periods, then hours, minutes and seconds. The seconds digit reaches zero exactly at midnight, never before.

Why the time zone matters

The year does not end everywhere at once. Kiritimati in the Line Islands (UTC+14) reaches New Year first; American Samoa (UTC−11) is among the last, 25 hours later. Pick any of the 400+ zones in the list and the board re-targets to that zone's midnight at once, with no reload. The zone is detected from your browser's own setting; nothing asks for your location. Daylight saving time

In zones that turn their clocks back in autumn, the exact time left is one hour more than a calendar count suggests: from 1 October, New York has 92 days and 1 hour until New Year, while UTC and India have 92 days and 0 hours. The board shows the exact figure.

Leap years

A leap year has 366 days. The board counts to the real midnight, so the extra day is already included whenever it applies, and the progress bar along the bottom is measured against the real length of the year. The marks on that bar are the month boundaries, with the quarters drawn heavier. Why the extra day exists at all is in the leap year article.

Accuracy

Every tick is derived from your device's clock and re-checked each second, including after the tab was in the background or the device was asleep. If your clock is right, the board is right. When the year turns in the selected zone, the board shows a short New Year moment and then counts down the year ahead without a reload.

Privacy

The page sets no cookies and stores nothing. Time-zone detection uses the browser's own setting with no location permission. Visits are counted in aggregate by Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and no fingerprinting.
