Days remaining from the first of each month

Counting from midnight at the start of the date to midnight on 1 January. These figures are the same every year, except that January and February gain one day in a leap year.

For any other date, take the row for the month and subtract the days already passed in it: on 15 October, 92 − 14 = 78 days remain until 1 January.

How the count is worked out

A year has 365 days, or 366 when it is a leap year. Subtract the day-of-year from that length and you have the whole days left after today. The board goes one step further: it measures the exact time to midnight on 1 January — whole days, then hours, minutes and seconds — so the days digit drops by one at the same moment every night, at midnight in the selected zone.

Why the answer depends on where you are

Midnight on 1 January is not one instant. It arrives first at UTC+14 in Kiribati's Line Islands and last at UTC−12 on the uninhabited Baker and Howland Islands, 26 hours later. Days left, hours left, or seconds left?

Whole days are the number most people want. The board also shows the hours, minutes and seconds because a day count alone hides the moment that matters: at 23:59 on 31 December there are zero days left and one minute to go. If you only need the day count, read the first cell of the board; if you want the moment itself, watch the last one.
